A community-driven vision plan for revitalizing public spaces in Sunnyside, Queens, with a focus on transforming areas beneath elevated transit infrastructure into vibrant, inclusive, and safe community hubs.
The project combined urban strategy with on-the-ground activation. Two pilot interventions — a night market at Lowery Plaza and a solar-powered lighting installation at Sabba Park — tested early design ideas and fostered local partnerships. These temporary installations drew large community participation, reactivated underused spaces, and demonstrated the potential of community-informed design.
The process was grounded in multilingual and multi-generational engagement. Seniors participated in bilingual story circles, local students explored urban identity through AI-assisted collages, and residents offered input via creative pop-ups and workshops. The result: a cohesive public realm agenda that connects underutilized plazas, green spaces, and commercial corridors into a more accessible, culturally resonant urban network.
